Churchill Downs filled a void in Louisville left by the closing of Oakland and Woodlawn, two earlier race courses.

The then-rural location was along Louisville and Nashville Railroad tracks, allowing for easy transport of horses.

Clark, who preferred longer races to the relatively short ones that had become popular by the s, was running short of funds, and in sold the track to a syndicate led by William E.

In early , Applegate, who had made his fortune as a bookmaker, turned over the day-to-day operation of the track to Charles F. Grainger , then the mayor of Louisville , in an effort to move Churchill Downs away from being primarily known for gambling.

Among the new people Applegate brought on board to help him run the rack was Col. Matt Winn of Louisville. Churchill Downs prospered and the Kentucky Derby then became the preeminent stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses in North America.

During that early period, a new clubhouse was built in order to promote social interaction, and new events such as steeplechases, automobile races, and band concerts were held at the track.

The State Fair was held on the grounds, featuring the odd spectacle of two locomotives being intentionally crashed head-on in the infield.

On June 5, , African American jockey James Lee set a record that has never been beaten when he won the entire six-race card at Churchill Downs.

In , parimutuel betting machines were introduced as gambling began to be less controversial again, and the wagering portion of the track's business became more profitable.

Churchill Downs was designated a National Historic Landmark in On Friday, June 19, , Churchill Downs hosted its first-ever night race with an attendance of over 27, Churchill Downs ventured into the music business, organizing the inaugural HullabaLOU Music Festival, held on the weekend of July 23—25, The track had planned to make this an annual event to compete with other summer music festivals.

HullabaLOU attracted 78, people but that fell short of the more than , expected by the company. The company attributed this to the brutal heat, but others cited high ticket prices in a poor economy.

On Wednesday, June 22, , an EF2 tornado hit the Louisville area, striking the stables and chapel at Churchill Downs, at EF1 intensity. Over horses had to be evacuated from the damaged stables and be relocated to other stables that were not damaged by the tornado.

The tornado did not cause any damage to the twin spires or the clubhouse. Thurby is a portmanteau for Thursday plus Derby , and this name for the Thursday racing in Derby week has been recognized by Churchill Downs since From through Churchill Downs has had twelve CEO's.

The twin spires atop the grandstands are the most recognizable architectural feature of Churchill Downs and are used as a symbol of the track and the Derby.

They were designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez and built in The dirt oval main track, on which the Derby is run, is one mile 1.

In summer the same artist added another mural depicting all of the trainers and updating the Jockey's painting, adding Calvin Borel and Edgar Prado to it.

These updates are done yearly to accommodate new winning trainers and jockeys. The new design has been somewhat controversial since the new suites block full view of the spires from most angles.

Racing at Churchill Downs occurs in three meets though for the majority of its existence there were only two meets per year.

The spring meet starts one week before the Derby and continues until early July. It showed that Mike loved Derby and his knowledge of the track, its history, and of the horses was Top Notch.

Our next stop was the track, amongst all the box seats that Jim would never, ever, EVER be able to afford. It was nice to actually SEE the track you don't see the track from the Infield at all Where we were standing afforded a pretty good view of the main stretch, the finish line, and the Winner's Circle.

I don't think that played out the way I wanted it to. After our walking tour we were free to check out the museum and to see the movie.

The movie theater was shaped as you might expect like a race track. The swivel seats were very Socially Distancing spaced, and this appeared to be the center point of the museum.

The move was an in-the-round experience that utilized the entire screen with varying focus points, the audio was outstanding, and the movement and flow of the film were smooth and told each element of the film perfectly.

Sitting there spinning around to focus on the next part of the story was part of the fun. It was a very immersive experience, and I can't wait to visit to see it again.

After the movie we moved out to look at the rest of the museum. It's a well organized museum with informative displays and a lot of great historical artifacts.

The audio components for some of the exhibits are disabled because of COVID, but there's still plenty to learn by reading what's on the display.

Attending Derby as a spectator is a lot of fun and is what Derby is all about, but this little behind-the-scenes outing is a great way to see Churchill Downs and appreciate what a beautiful facility it really is.

Like all northern communities in Canada, Churchill can sometimes see the aurora borealis Northern Lights when there is a high amount of solar activity.

Visibility also depends on the sky being dark enough to see them, which usually precludes their visibility in the summer due to twilight all night long.

Churchill has a subarctic climate Köppen climate classification : Dfc with long very cold winters, and short, cool to mild summers.

Churchill's Churchill lies just south of the parallel of Stockholm , Sweden , and just north of that of Inverness , United Kingdom , both of which have a much milder climate, with all months being significantly warmer than coastal Northern Manitoba.

This is in part due to the lack of influence of the Gulf Stream on the Hudson Bay climate. Tourism and ecotourism are major contributors to the local economy, with the polar bear season October and November being the largest.

Tourists also visit to watch beluga whales in the Churchill River in June and July. The area is also popular for birdwatchers and to view the aurora borealis.

In the Churchill region, however, many alliances between bears are made in the fall. These friendships last only until the ice forms, then it is every bear for itself to hunt ringed seals.

Starting in the s, the town developed a sizable tourism industry focused on the migration habits of the polar bear. Tourists can safely view polar bears from specially modified vehicles built to navigate the tundra terrain.

Utilizing a set of trails created by the Canadian and US military, responsible tour operators are granted permits to access these trails for wildlife viewing.

Staying on these established trails ensures no further damage is done to the tundra ecosystem. October and early November are the most feasible times to see polar bears, thousands of which wait on the vast peninsula until the water freezes on Hudson Bay so they can return to hunt their primary food source, ringed seals.

There are also opportunities to see polar bears in the non-winter months, with tours via boat visiting the coastal areas where polar bears can be found both on land and swimming in the sea.

Many locals even leave their cars unlocked in case someone needs to make a quick escape from the polar bears in the area. Thousands of beluga whales , which move into the warmer waters of the Churchill River estuary during July and August to calf, are a major summer attraction.

Polar bears are present as well, and can sometimes be seen from boat tours at this time of year.

Churchill is also a destination for bird watchers from late May until August. Plus, more than birds, including parasitic jaeger , Smith's longspur , stilt sandpiper , and Harris's sparrow , nest there.
